The effect of anti-macrophage serum and anti-lymphocyte serum on the reticuloendothelial system of chipmunk

Abstract
In recent years in vivo and in vitro properties of anti-macrophage serum(AMS) and anti-lymphocyte serum (ALS) have been widely studied by many investigators. Heterologous ALS has potent immunosuppressive activities for both cellular and humoral immune responses. The immunosuppressive activities of the heterologous AMS are controversial at present, but the phagocytic characteristics of peritoneal macrophages are affected by the AMS. However, the mechanisms by which AMS and ALS exert their activities are still unresolved.
The present study was undertaken to evaluate the cross-reactivities in cytotoxic tests and the effect of AMS and ALS on the carbon clearance of reticuloendothelial system of chipmunk.
In in vitro cytotoxic tests, AMS was not specific for macrophages, and ALS not for lymphocytes; AMS cross-reacted and was cytotoxic to lymphocytes, and ALS to macrophages.
Clearance of colloidal carbon from peripheral blood of chipmunk was impaired by intraperitoneal injection of AMS or ALS.
